Saltbox:
n: A wooden frame house that originated in New England with
a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back creating two
storeys in the front, and one storey in the back. A flat front and
central chimney are also recognizable features.
Sampler:
n: A
decorative piece of cloth embroidered with various designs or
mottoes in a variety of stitches, serving as an example of skill at
needlework. In the colonial days, female children usually stitched
their alphabet to practice both their stitchery skills and their
alphabet.
Sgraffito:
n: Decoration
produced on pottery or ceramic by scratching through a surface of
plaster or glazing to reveal a different color underneath.
Shaker
Box:
n:
Hand made, (usually oval or round) box that is held together with
tacks instead of glue. The “fingers” that overlap the seam of the
box is a widely recognizable feature of the shaker box.
First made over
two hundred years ago, these containers were used to hold food
stuffs in the pantry, buttons for the seamstress and tacks in the
shop.
Shelf Sitter:
n: Primitive crafters use this term for any small items that
can be placed on a shelf such as a doll bust, a small sign, etc.
Skein:
n: A
length of thread or yarn wound in a loose long coil; usually
referring to floss.
Soft
Sculpture: n:
A sculpture made of pliant materials, such as cloth. The sculpture
could be anything from a doll to fabric flowers.
Stitchery:
n: Needlework that involves sewing. The word can also refer
to the finished item as well (such as a sampler).
Stump
Doll:
n: A doll that has no legs, and short stubby arms.
Sugar
Cones: n: Sugar that has been molded into a cone shape, and is
often wrapped in blue paper. Sugar was sold by the cone in colonial
times, and was very valuable. It was most often kept locked away
with other valuable household goods, such as tea.
Sweet
Annie: n: An annual herb (also called wormwood) that is very
fragrant with feathery green to light brown foliage. When dried, it
is often used to make floral arrangements such as wreaths, or
simply bundled and hung on the wall.
