Make-do:
n: A substitute for something unobtainable at the time; a
makeshift. During colonial days, for example, if a woman was unable
to afford a pincushion, she would make do with what she had and
create one with items such as a broken glass as a base, and scraps
of fabric for the cushion. In the “primitive world” this word often
describes a vintage style pin cushion, or something that was made
out of household items. It can also describe other fabric
sculptures mounted on a base such as a candle stick, doorknob, and
more.
Mica Flakes:
n: Also called “Vintage Mica Snow”: It’s a transparent,
natural rock forming mineral with a silvery sheen that has been
processed into small flakes. In the early 1900’s it became a
popular seller as ornamental snow for Christmas displays. Now,
artists like to use it as a general glitter for fabric items, tags,
candles, floral items, and even in bath and body products.
Modge Podge:
n: A popular brand of decoupage glue.
Muslin:
n: A light-weight, finely woven cotton fabric. It comes in natural,
bleached, or tea dyed. Since this fabric is so affordable and
versatile, primitive artists usually use it as the base for most of
their fabric creations.
